Our Programmes

Our Science Programme  doesn’t simply deliver grades. The programme is much more; much much more. The Science Lab Science Programme aims to groom the next generation of thinkers and doers; it actively seeks to stretch boundaries and is committed to continual improvement.

The Science Lab Science Programme has three unique features:

1. Science Experiments

2. Practice Questions

3. Passionate Teachers

Through the journey of life, we realise that we learn best by touching, feeling and seeing something with our own hands, our own eyes. No amount of detailed study of anatomy will beat the steep learning curve of the trainee surgeon when he makes his first cut on his patient; a soldier learns much more about the abilities of his weapons and his physical boundaries on the battlefield than in theoretical military training. It is with this deep belief in the power of the personal experience that The Science Lab Science Program was crafted.

Science Experiments: The Dynamite, Accumulator, Accelerator and Magnifier.

Science experiments are used in the program to develop scientific passion and resilience, deliver content, and inspire excellence in Science.

The Dynamite: Breaking down barriers; develop a passion for Science.

Many students have a resistance to Science when they first encounter it in Primary 3. It is a subject that is foreign , requires much memory work, and difficult to score in. Interesting experiments are used in class to break down their mental barriers against the study of Science. The experiments are fun and engaging, and the students will grow to love Science. They will want to find out more and will never put down an interesting science article again. The hands-on experience will also encourage students to ask the right questions, and spur them on to find out the best answers.

Warning (Learning Hazard):  After enrolling in the program, parents may face incessant clamoring from their children to buy science encyclopedias, science apps on iPad, etc. The parents may also find a heightened sense of curiosity and awareness in their child, and their children start asking difficult questions. “How were we actually made? Does DNA or the soul determine who we are?”

The Accumulator: More Knowledge & Accelerator: More with less

Science experiments are also used in a very efficient way to deliver content. The experiments not only have a ‘WOW’ factor; they are specially used to bring relevant content from the schools’ science syllabus alive. For example, in the learning about the human circulatory system, students will be asked to see, touch, feel and dissect a real animal’s heart. In getting the students to see and touch the different chambers/parts of the heart, advanced terms such as atrium, ventricles, chordae tendinae can be taught and committed to long-term memory. This is done at primary level when other students will only come across these terms at upper secondary levels 3-4 years later. The effective usage of experiments creates an accelerated learning experience where much more can be comprehended by the student in much shorter period of time.

The Magnifier: Know how to deal with 100% of exam questions

The Science Lab Science Programs pushes students beyond their comfort zone and their intellectual limits using experiments. During the execution of experiments, students grapple with the unfamiliar and try to make sense of apparatus, procedures and ideas bombarding towards them by their teachers and peers. Coupled with guidance from the teachers, students in The Science Lab Science Program gradually learn how to take stock of new situations, zoom in on the important issues and produce relevant and concise results. These skills will serve them well when tacking the Ultra-Difficult (UD) questions that have been the norm in school Science examinations in the past years.

The Practice Questions: The Mindstretcher and Mark-Achiever

The practice questions used in The Science Lab Science Program are thoughtfully crafted to train students to 1) differentiate keywords from information ‘noise’, 2) answer with mark-scoring keywords, 3) identify weaknesses in understanding of content and 4) affirm the knowledge and thinking skills acquired.

The basic tutorials will aid the students in assimilating basic critical concepts and boost their confidence in manipulating the knowledge acquired. It is also at this level that basic concepts are reinforced to effectively eliminate careless mistakes.

The intermediate and advanced tutorials will put the students’ higher order thinking skills to test. These tutorials will require students to process advanced data/information and will challenge their comprehension and analytic skills as well as inference abilities. The advanced tutorials will include content that is at least 2-3 years ahead of the students’ biological age.

The mock paper tutorials will be administered 2 to 3 weeks before the major school examinations. These tutorials simulate exam-type questions and will be completed under exam requirements. Such conditioning will increase the students’ proficiency in dealing with exam questions under stressful conditions. Exam skills will also be the focus of the lessons prior to major exams, and students will be taught how to write answers that scores the most number of marks.

All in all, the tutorials aim to stretch the students’ intellectual capabilities as well as translate the knowledge, skills and passion for science into top marks in school examinations.
